Transportation

Transport from the airport to the venue

The AWTC will be held at Fujino Waldorf School, which is located in Fujino, a district of Sagamihara City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Although Kanagawa is a county next to Tokyo, Fujino is a small rural town and its local transport is rather basic. Travelling to Fujino from Tokyo city centre, and more so from the international airports, is not very convenient, therefore, we will do our best to assist with your transport requirements. Please follow our instructions on how to travel from the airports to Fujino.

Tokyo has two airports Narita and Haneda. Narita is the larger of the two and is the main international airport for Tokyo. It is approximately 135 kilometers from Fujino, and Haneda is about 84 kms. Although Haneda is closer to Fujino (distance wise), there is not much difference between Haneda and Narita in terms of travelling time and cost to Fujino. We strongly suggest that you choose Narita as your arrival port as there are more international flights, also we can provide you with sufficient support service at Narita – support service at Haneda will be limited.

We suggest that you take public transport (airport limousine bus and train) from the airport. On your arrival at the airport, our support staff will meet you and direct you how to get to Fujino. Our support staff will also be available at bus and train stations in order to smooth your transit.

Please note that your registration fee does NOT include transportation costs between the airport and Fujino and the return trip to the airport. You need to pay directly at the time when you purchase train/bus tickets.

Costs of transportation:
From Narita Airport
A one-way-fare from Narita Airport will be JPY2,140 total.

  • Narita Airport → (Limousine Bus Keisei Shuttle Bus JPY1,000) → Tokyo station
  • Tokyo station → Takao station(transfer to different train) → Fujino station(Train JPY1,140)

From Haneda Airport
A one-way-fare from Haneda Airport will be JPY2,070 total.

  • Haneda Airport → (Limousine Bus JPY930) → Tokyo station.
  • Tokyo station → Takao station (transfer to different train) → Fujino station(Train JPY1,140)

It takes around 3-4 hours to get to Fujino from the airports, so please ensure that your flight arrives in Japan with sufficient time to reach Fujino. If your arrival time is later than 20:00, you might not be able to get to Fujino on the same day.

On your return journey, you will need to use public transport again. Detailed instructions will be given to you during the conference.

More details of the transport and our support service are on the next chapter.

How to get to the Conference venue from Narita and Haneda Airport

From the airports to the conference venue, use public transportation, e.g bus and train. The following instructions show the easiest and least costly way of transportation. Note that the transportation fees for bus and train are not included in the conference fee. Please purchase the tickets on your own. Since you need cash in yen to purchase the tickets, so please make sure to exchange currency at the departing or arriving airport. You can use paper money or coin as long as it is in yen.

The conference venue, Fujino, is located in the mountainous area, far from the center of Tokyo, so it is difficult to reach there on your own.

Please follow the instructions from conference staff wearing a green vest with AWTC logo waiting at Narita and Haneda airports, Tokyo station and Takao station from 9:00 in the morning to 19:00 in the evening On April 25th.
For those arriving before this date, please refer to the last part of these instructions.

How to get to AWTC Venue
From Narita Airport to Tokyo Station

You should take the Shuttle Bus operated by Keisei Bus to Tokyo Station.

Purchase a bus ticket to Tokyo Station (Yaesu exit) at Keisei Bus Company Counter at the Arrival lobby of the Narita Airport. The bus ticket costs 1,000 yen.

The departure time and bus stop number are shown on your bus ticket. When you go out of the Arrival Lobby, you will see bus stops. Please get on the bus at the bus stop indicated on your bus ticket before the departure time.

In Narita Airport Terminal 1, bus stops are about 300 meters away from the Keisei Bus Company Counter. In Narita Airport Terminal 2, bus stops are close to the Keisei Bus Company Counter. On April 6, a new terminal called Narita Airport Terminal 3 will open. At this terminal, you can purchase bus tickets at the Travel Support GPA Service Counter. Bus stops are about 300 meters away from the Counter.

Please get off at Tokyo Station Yaesu Exit. It would take 60 to 100 minutes depending on the traffic.

Refer to the following website for more details about the shuttle bus.

At Tokyo Station

From the bus stop, walk toward the JR Tokyo Station Yaesu North Exit, which is about 300 meters away.

Map below shows how to get to the Tokyo Station Yaesu North exit from the bus stops arriving from Narita (follow the red arrow) and Haneda (follow the green arrow).

At Tokyo Station Yaesu Exits, purchase a JR ticket for 1,140 yen.

Put your ticket into the automated turnstile to enter into the Tokyo Station. Do not forget to pick up your ticket from the automated turnstile, as you will need it when getting off the train.

In the Tokyo Station, walk about 200 meters to platform number 1 and 2, where the JR Chuo Line departs. Get on a JR Chuo Line bound for Takao Station from platform number 1 or 2. (Refer to the map of Tokyo Station below) Make sure to get on a train bound to Takao. Otherwise, you would need to change trains.

At Takao Station

Get off at Takao Station. It takes about 60 minutes from Tokyo Station.

At Takao Station, do not go out of the station. You will only change to outbound Chuo Line train, so you do not need to purchase any ticket here. Hold onto the ticket you purchased at the Tokyo Station and take a train bound for any of the following stations: Otsuki, Matsumoto, Kofu, Kawaguchiko, or Kobuchizawa. These trains depart from platforms number 2, 3 or 4. There will be Conference staff at the station, so follow the Conference staff’s instructions. If you can’t find the Conference staff, you can ask JR East staff or any traveler how to get to Fujino, and you will be able to get instructions. Please be careful NOT to take inbound train for Tokyo. As Takao is a small station, it should be quite straightforward.

Attention!

Most Chuo Line outbound trains that stop at Takao Station also stop at Fujino Station, which is your destination. However, the following 3 trains do NOT stop at Fujino: Rapid trains departing from Takao Station at 9:00, 9:25 and 9:52. Please be careful not to get on these trains.

At Fujino Station

After a 13-minute train ride from Takao, get off at Fujino Station, which is two stops from Takao, after Sagamiko.

Be careful not to miss the Fujino station, as there is probably no announcement in English. Get ready to get off when the train passes Sagamiko station. There are two buttons at the side of the train door. Press the green button in order to open the door when getting off the train.

At Fujino Station, cross the bridge over railway, go to the only exit of the station, give your ticket at the exit and go out the station. When you get out of the station, you will find Conference staff and a car to take you to the conference venue. They will be there from 9:00 through 19:00 on April 25th. If you are arriving at Fujino Station after 19:00, please be sure to contact the Conference Secretariat by e-mail beforehand, as there is no taxi service available at Fujino Station at night.

Emergency Telephone Number

For those who get lost on the way, we will set up an emergency telephone number for giving instructions. English speaking staff will attend the calls.

Emergency Telephone Number: 080−6600−7113

If you get lost, find a public phone and call the above number by putting a 100-yen coin into the public phone.

Note that this number is available only on April 25th. Do not call this number before this date.

For those arriving before April 25th

Please take the route explained above and follow instructions of Conference staff to go to Fujino. If you are staying in the center of Tokyo, you can get on the Chuo Line bound for Takao from JR Chuo Line station nearest to you. After departing from Tokyo Station, JR Chuo Line stops at Ochanomizu, Yotsuya, and Shinjuku stations in the central Tokyo area, so you can get on the train from any of these stations.

Train ticket to Takao is 1,140 yen from Tokyo and Ochanomizu stations, and 970 yen from Yotsuya and Shinjuku Stations. Alternatively, you can purchase a ticket for the minimum fare (140 yen) and pay for the rest at Fujino Station when getting off.

Shinjuku Station is a very large station like Tokyo Station. Chuo Line trains bound for Takao depart from platforms number 11 and 12.
